Description: this release is pretty special for me - it was the first of my cassette releases, something i'd wanted to have done professionally (with the pad stamp and j-card inlay and all of that) since i was a kid. i grew up using tapes, of course, and became proficient early on at recording and splicing my own mixes of mostly video game music and radio broadcasts. having something like this made was a pipe dream, but the format catching back on has allowed me to explore it in all kinds of exciting ways. cassette is a pretty limited format. the most common kind of tape, Type-I (ferric oxide) lacks high end and has a very high noise floor. this can be alleviated with various noise reduction methods (dolby NR B, NR C, dbX, etc), but those can be a little hairy to use, as each deck has to be properly calibrated, otherwise it can sound wonky. you can also use other kinds of tape (Type-II is less noisy but has less bass response, it's also more expensive and BASF/EMTEC stopped making the stuff) i find it's much more beneficial to play to the format and put work on them that benefits from the limitations. cassettes were also where i really started to play with the idea of the physical release having some variance from the digital, though that isn't seen until the next cassette release, ♞, which has major edits to some of the tracks. as with above, this is usually to play to the format in some way, whether it be serious mastering changes or track order/length adjustments to fit the format's two sides more closely. i've been doing cassettes since, and would like to keep at it! it's currently my favorite format to work with. i should have one of these recordings of analogue physical releases for you every day or two, so stay tuned! digital version: lapfox.bandcamp.com/album/caract-re-difficile lots of love ♥ LISTEN / SUPPORT / FOLLOW: HOMEPAGE / BANDCAMP: halleylabs.associates PATREON: patreon.com/lapfox
